Swedish police say five people have been shot in an attack at a school in the city of Orebro 200km west of Stockholm, triggering a massive response by rescue services.

"Five persons are confirmed shot," police said in a statement.

"This is currently seen as attempted murder, arson and aggravated weapons offence."

The extent of the victims' injuries were not immediately clear.

Ambulances, rescue services and police are onsite, a spokesperson for local rescue services said.

A police spokesperson declined to comment further when reached by Reuters.

Police did not immediately say whether a suspect had been apprehended.

Students are being sheltered in nearby buildings.

Other parts of the school were evacuated following the violence.

"The reports of violence in Orebro are very serious. The police are on site and the operation is in full swing. The government is in close contact with the police, and is closely following developments," Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer told Swedish news agency TT.
