One of these is Benalla-based Extons Earthmoving who was awarded the contract for the Murray Valley channel refurbishment project, which is taking place between Katunga and Muckatah.
The refurbishment of the Murray Valley channel is one of the larger projects during the 2023 winter works program. It will involve remodelling up to 10km of channel banks to improve the efficiency and reliability of flows to irrigators.
Significant progress has been made, despite the challenges caused by the wet weather.
Extons Earthmoving managing director Ian Exton said having projects like the refurbishment works going to local contractors was good news for the region.
“When projects like this stay local, the whole regional economy benefits,” he said.
“Not only does it support our workers and their families, it supports the local suppliers we get materials from, the local stores our staff get lunch from, and the petrol stations they fill up. It’s a real win-win situation.”
G-MW Infrastructure Delivery Services general manager Warren Jose said using reliable local contractors helped ensure projects were delivered efficiently.
“It is great to be able to support the local economy by hiring regional earthmoving contractors,” he said.
“Keeping these projects local also often creates savings, as there is less travel time required, and less expenditure on transporting materials and providing lodging for workers.
“This ensures the works are being completed at competitive rates by contractors we know we can rely on.”
The refurbishment works will be completed in time for the 2023-24 irrigation season, which begins on August 15.
