The elevation into the upper echelons of politics came one day after the Nationals agreed to the Liberal Party’s net-zero by 2050 plan.
Mr Pitt has been critical of renewable energy in the past and publicly championed nuclear energy as the better choice.
The Bundaberg politician and former sugar cane farmer quickly became a target for Labor straight after his promotion, with the Opposition doubting his support for the net-zero plan.
Mr Pitt had served in the cabinet since February 2020 while Michael McCormack led the party, but was kicked out when Barnaby Joyce won the leadership contest in June 2021.
