Six Cobram Secondary College students went head-to-head with teams across the region in Wangaratta for the annual School Sport Victoria Hume Region Bowls Championship.
Held in Wangaratta on Wednesday, March 19, the fixture saw players battle it out for a spot in the state championships later this year.
The Cobram junior team - comprised of Luke Dunn (skip), Xander Sullivan (second) and Dooley Quinane (lead) - made it through to the finals, where they went down to the home side by just one shot and were thus denied a slot at the state competition.
Joshua Sullivan (skip), Aden Modderkolk (second) and Tyler Holt (lead) made up the senior team.
Despite some fierce competition from more experienced players, Sullivan’s team managed to come away with a win.
Cobram Bowling Club community development officer and coach Haydn Smith was impressed by the boys’ consistency in play, and said there is plenty of room for improvement.
“I was thrilled,” Mr Smith said.
“They’re good bowlers, but they’re good young men too. They’re respectful, willing to listen, took instruction really well, and followed through.
“The school and Cobram community can be very proud of them.”
