Corowa C Grade 2 will play St Pat’s at Xavier after a 118-run victory over Albury Umpires last Saturday.
Corowa won the toss and chose to bat first on a hot sunny afternoon. Pat Mitchell opened the batting with Lachlan Raggett for a change.
The pair got Corowa off to a promising start with some smart cricket shots before Raggett departed for 10 and when Mitchell was out caught for 13 not long after with the score on 27 the Albury Umpires team had their noses in front.
Enter Michael Drew and Nathan Rhodes, two of the most technical and proper bats you’ll see at C grade level.
They dug their heels in, putting on a 131-run partnership with Drew continuing his good form making his fourth half century after the Christmas break along with his century on his way to a well-made 69.
Rhodes made his third half century since the Christmas break with his highest score for the season, making 80.
Jordan Wilson, Doug Lavis and Billy Raggett batting as a lower order batsmen this week, all made handy late runs as Corowa finished their innings with a very competitive 8/262.
Corowa got off to a perfect start with Marc Playford taking the wicket of the Albury Umpires captain with his second ball, only for a controversial no ball to be called by the Albury Umpire.
However, Jordan Wilson would make sure he wasn’t going to hang around much longer getting his wicket the very next over and then when Marc Playford got his first wicket two balls later, the Albury Umpires were in trouble with the score on 2/17.
This brought the two dangerous batsmen in Greer and Kiffen to the crease for Albury Umpires.
The two batsmen got on top until the drinks break as they piled on 104 runs before Nathan Rhodes would turn the game on its head first removing Kiffen and then bowling Sainty the very next ball to have the Umpires 4/121.
In his next over Rhodes removed the dangerous Greer for 80.
With the score 5/130, the game was well and truly back on Corowa’s terms. Doug and Eli Lavis would collect three wickets between them along with Sam Burdon and Lloyd Grantham picking up one apiece.
The Umpires would be all out for 144 after losing their final eight wickets for only 23 runs.
The grand final promises to be a cracking contest between the best two teams of the season.
The boys would love to see as many of our supporters at Xavier cheering them on as they battle to be premiers for season 24/25.
Under 16s
The 16s take on East Albury at Ball Park and hope to go back-to-back as premiers following their impressive six-wicket win over St Pat’s.
Wednesday night was the Our Under 16s started their finals campaign last Wednesday night.
Losing the toss and bowling first on a nice wicket, Joe Lavis and Jack Torney took the new ball.
Jack Torney had the first breakthrough with a sharp catch taken by wicketkeeper Austin Ross-Anderson.
Levi Phibbs and Eli Lavis came into the attack and it didn’t take Levi long to make an impact as he knocked the stumps over.
Eli followed suit also knocking the stumps down as St Pat’s were 3/26 after 10 overs.
St Pat’s looked to be settled as the score ticked over.
Confusion between the batsmen led to a sharp run out by Joe Lavis as the score was at 4/58.
Soon after a spectacular one-handed catch was taken in close by Eli Lavis as Harry Norman claimed his first scalp.
The spin pair in Harry Norman and Cal Corcoran proved to be too much for the batsmen.
After drinks Harry Norman claimed two in two balls and Cal also claimed one as St Pats fell to 8/73.
Harry finished with 3/12 off six overs and Cal Corcoran with 1/10 off five. This pair was the difference.
Jack Torney took to the last two as he finished with 3/7 off 4.3 overs.
St Pats were bowled out for 79 after 29 overs in a great performance by Corowa.
The night wasn’t yet done as Corowa had the task of facing seven overs in tough conditions.
Jack Torney and Austin opened the batting. The pair looked positive before Jack was bowled for 4.
Corowa braved it out until stumps, finishing on 1/17.
Friday night the boys resumed with a shaky start as Eli Lavis departed without scoring.
Joe Lavis also departed not long after for 11 as Corowa were 3/31 making it look tough as St Pat’s bowled well.
Levi Phibbs and Austin Ross-Anderson fought it out and didn’t give the opposition an opportunity.
The scoreboard slowly ticked along until Levi Phibbs departed for a well fought 11.
Austin and Archie Bedford then finished it in a hurry featuring a couple of boundaries.
Corowa chased down 80 losing just 4 wickets.
Archie Bedford finished on 9 not out and Austin made a gritty 37 not out.
Under 14’s Div 1
East Albury won the toss and elected to bat and started with a strong opening combination.
Corowa got some good balls in early but strayed onto the batsmen’s legs too much and got punished.
After four overs it was time to take the pace off the ball and the first wicket fell at 27 with a nice ball from Harry Norman taken cleanly by Dougy behind the stumps in the sixth over.
That brought their best two bats together with our spin attack keeping the runs down but unable to break the partnership. Caleb Anderson retired on 75 and shortly thereafter the score was 2/165 after 29 overs.
The wickets would then start to tumble especially when their other captain Riley Pargeter retired on 75. They went from 2/165 after 29 to be 8/208 after 38 overs before Caleb came back out.
The ploy was to keep the retired bats out for as long as possible to keep it a manageable target to chase.
To a degree this worked with East Albury finishing on 9/219. Harry Norman was the pick of the bowlers.
A little over five an over was the ask, something that the Under 14s have achieved, so game on.
Harry and Jagger opened and got off to a steady start. Harry was caught behind for 32 in the 14th over with the score on 51 bringing Cal to the crease.
Immediately Cal set about scoring with a four off his first ball.
The East Albury bowlers were overall bowling a tight line however Cal punished one of their bowlers for 10 runs in the over before he half hit one to be caught for 18, bringing Archie to the crease.
Jagger Doody was working really hard and playing a very patient innings even though frustrated by not getting as many through the fielders as he would like.
After a cracking shot for four he chased a wide one outside off and was caught in the gully on 22 with the score on 99 after 26 overs.
A little behind in the run rate, with Archie and Dougy at the crease and a lot of batting to come the time had come to make a push on the run rate with Dougy and Archie upping the tempo.
Dougy made a cracking start with three great boundaries before he was caught behind on 12 and that started the rout where we would lose our remaining six wickets for a total of four runs with the last over netting the bowler a hat trick in the process.
It was disappointing to end the season with a batting collapse however in reviewing the season there were a lot of positives for all of the boys with improvement in their games and a lot of fun along the way.
Under 14’s Div 2
The excitement was palpable as Corowa's Division 2 cricket team geared up for the finals, facing their formidable opponents, Kiewa, once again.
The match was expected to be tough, and it certainly lived up to its billing.
Having lost the toss, Corowa found themselves batting first, a strategy captain Jackson and coach Cath believed would give them the chance to set a strong target.
Openers George Smith and Jackson Barber were ready for the challenge, but George's innings was cut short by a spectacular slips catch. Leo Davis was dismissed soon after, bringing Oli Matthews to the crease.
Matthews and Barber steadied the ship with a solid partnership. Barber, affectionately known as Jacko, played a composed innings, scoring 29 before being dismissed just before drinks.
Will Torney added a valuable 26 runs, while Oli Matthews shone with an impressive 71 in the final overs. Albie Wood's aggressive approach saw him score 7 not-out off seven balls, Franco Moolman contributed one, and Jaxon Collins finished unbeaten on one bringing Corowa's total to 160.
On Sunday, Corowa returned to the field at Kiewa, determined to defend their total.
Despite tidy bowling efforts, early breakthroughs were elusive. Will Torney finally made an impact, getting an edge through to Smash, followed by Oli Matthews dismissing the Kiewa opener.
Bailey Hicks' athletic fielding and enthusiastic talk were noteworthy, but Corowa struggled to contain Kiewa's batting lineup.
In the end, Kiewa managed to chase down the target, leaving Corowa just short of victory.
The match made for some nervous moments for the coaches, but Kiewa emerged victorious, moving on to the next stage.
Despite the loss, it was a season filled with growth, learning, and memorable performances for the Corowa boys.
Coach Cath expressed pride in the team's efforts and hopes they have developed a lasting love for cricket. "Well done, boys!" she concluded.

Billy was not out on 26 and Jobe not out on 25. Kobe Raggett 10* Harry Closter 9* batted well and Mauritz Moolman 17* played an excellent knock towards the end of the innings with Corowa finishing on 4/128.
