They were the only four game winners for the day in a high-quality field. Henry Boswood’s team were runners-up.
David Blake from the Bendigo Bank congratulated the club on the running of the day and presented the prizes to the winners.
Club president Chris Preddy said it was a great day for the club.
‘’Our members gave terrific support with catering, presenting the greens and surrounds in great order, assembling a capacity field, running the bar and organising the raffle,” he said.
The 26-team excellent field included teams from a wide area including Mathoura, Moama, Bendigo, Port Melbourne, Tongala, Shepparton Golf, Shepparton Park and Hill Top/Tatura.
Midweek
There is only one round of pennant before the finals. Two teams look as though they will make finals depending on the results of this week’s games.
Division one lost against Seymour and this has put the side sixth on the ladder.
Division two had a good win over Seymour and is now third.
Division three is unable to make the finals and division five played Euroa and sits third on the ladder.
Division one travelled to Seymour winning two rinks but losing overall, 50-55. Noel Reddrop’s team of Chris Williams, Bob Mason and Graeme King won 22-12.
A strong start helped them lead from start of the game to the end. They led 15-3 after 10 ends and 22-4 after 17 ends. They lost the last four ends, but this did not alter the outcome of the game.
Greg Shilling and his team also won 17-14. They started well and led 10-3 after nine ends. The game tightened up after this with both teams taking turns to win ends. They were able to hold on for a good win.
A horror start saw Joe Greco and his team unable to recover, and they went down 11-29. They tried hard to get back into the game but were unable to.
Division two also played Seymour and won all rinks for an overall win, 65-53.
Graeme Woodcocks’s rink staged a great comeback to win 21-18. They were down all game and were behind 12-18 on the 18th end. Winning four shots on the next end put them behind 16-18.
Winning another four shots the next end put them in front, 20-18. They won the last end to hold on for a great win.
Maurie Hateley’s team won 19-16. They led 12-5 after the first 10 ends and seemed in control of the game.
Seymour won three of the next four ends to reduce the lead to 13-12 on the 14th end. Hateley and his team steadied and won by three shots.
Phil Denham’s team won 25-19. They also held a good lead 17-10 after 12 ends.
They lost six shots over the next two ends and then two shots on the 16th end to tie the score 18-all. They came home strongly, winning seven shots over the final ends to Seymour’s one shot.
Division three travelled to Numurkah ready for a tough game on Numurkah’s home green.
All teams had played about seven ends when the heavens opened with thunder, lightening and pouring rain. The game had to be abandoned for safety reasons, so the points were shared between the two teams.
Division five played Euroa at home with one winning rink and losing overall, 54-60.
Murray Boswood’s team of Keith Hindson, John Mac Fadyen and John Elliot were the winners, 21-18.
Both teams started the game well with the scores close until the 11th end where Boswood’s team led 11-8. They led 17-10 after 15 ends.
Euroa fought back and tied the score 18-all on the 19th end. Boswood and his team won the last two ends for a three-shot win.
Geoff Coad’s team lost in a close game 15-16. The scores were tied six-all on the eighth end, 12-all on the 16th end and 13-all on the 18th end.
Coad’s team won the next end to take the lead but lost the last two ends to go down by one.
Geoff Hocking’s team lost 18-26. Down 2-8 after six ends did not deter them as the won the next five ends to lead 15-8.
Losing seven shots on the next end tied the score 15-all. After that, Euroa was able to control the game and run out eight-shot winners.
Weekend
Kyabram’s division one face Hilltop at Hilltop in round 14 for fourth place and a spot in the Goulburn Valley weekend pennant finals.
After round 13, Hilltop is one point ahead of Kyabram after a seven-all draw with Euroa and Kyabram lost 4-14 to Tallygaroopna.
Division one put up a good fight against top-placed Tallygaroopna at home.
The overall difference of 12 shots (72-84) seemed too many for the standard of play across the board.
Greg Shilling’s rink winning 20-11 was the standout for the day, winning 14 of the 21 ends and held David Daws’ team to 11 shots.
Peter Lomas, Rob Sceney and Graham King all contributed across the day in a fine team effort.
Noel Reddrop’s side won 19-17. His team led 7-3 on the sixth end, then trailed 9-12 on the 12th end.
On the 19th end, they had regained the lead 19-13, and ran out winners 19-17 over Joe Lia’s team.
Mal Williams’ side had trouble keeping in touch with Mitch Sidebottom’s side.
They lost nine ends straight to the 18th end, then grabbed two fours to only go down 17-26.
Rob George’s side ran into a hot Guy Madigan and his team. He bowled a number of telling bowls that converted heads big time.
On the 11th end, George’s team held three shots, when Madigan slammed the jack into the ditch for four shots. A turn around of seven shots.
The score of 16-30 didn’t quite seem to be a true indication of how well George’s team bowled.
An overall spirited team performance will be needed next Saturday to make an unlikely dream of making the four a reality.
Division three’s loss to Shepparton Gold, 24-25, put paid to a finals berth.
Bob Mason’s team continued their great form with a 26-20 over Frank Ivak.
Terri Thomson and Helen Chapman with Wayne Chambers kept Ivak’s team quiet from 15-12 on the 12th end to the six-shot win.
Phil Denham’s team held sway all day in a close game. They worked hard to record their 24-18 win.
Bob Canute’s and Noel Thomson’s teams found the opposition a bit too strong. Canute lost 8-23 and Thomson was beaten11-32. Overall, division three lost 4-14, 69-93.
Murchison’s division five caused an upset at home, defeating Kyabram 14-2 and 72-50.
Don Cook’s team of Kayla Jackson, Murray Tenace and Geoff Coad stormed home from 12-18 on the 16th end to win 22-20.
Ray Harrison’s side fought hard all day but lost 20-24. John Fanning’s side unfortunately were never in the hunt and lost 8-28.
Division five retained second place on the ladder.
With Division three out of the race, they could use some assistance and a big team effort to overcome East Shepparton next week to retain the double chance.
Ted Hazelman’s team took over from Murray Boswood as the division seven dominant force this week.
Ian George, Super Second Ollie McInnes and Genial Jan MacFadyen had a wow of a day in their 44-5 triumph.
Boswood’s team won 24-16 over Ken Maude’s team in another fine performance.
Division seven play Rushworth at Rushworth nest week as a prelude to the second semi-final.
Parkland Golf Club
It was a sad day for members on Saturday, with the passing of life member Norm Tucker.
Tucker served four terms as president from around 2008 onwards and was a quiet achiever, busying himself looking after the welfare of the gardens on the course.

Women
Due to the continuing extreme heat, only a small field of 13 women turned up for the stroke event on February 4. Golfers all played in the one division.
Top score was played by the winner in Trudie Plumb, carding 75-19-56 nett.
Plumb was followed by Fay Glover with 74-17-57 nett in second place after a countback from Wendy Fulton with the same net score.
Fulton (57 nett) and Chris Kelly (60 nett) each received a ball for their effort.
The top two also won nearest the pin, Glover having success on the first while Plumb had her success on the 15th.
Plumb also took home the monthly medal with the best nett score of 56.
Campaspe 60 and over bowls
The Campaspe 60 and Over Bowls Group bowlers played at Tongala Bowls Club on a warm to hot day recently
The greens had recently been renovated were a little slow.
It was decided to play straight through the three games because of the heat.
Twenty-eight teams consisting of 112 bowlers competed for a chook.
Only three teams won three games.
Ivan Hicks’s team was third with three bowls in the head near the jack.
Runners-up was John Langley’s team from Rich River — Langley lead, Colin Tucker second, John Armstrong third and skipper John Riedell from Tongala — had five bowls near the jack.
Howard Tonkin‘s team from Kyabram, with five bowls nearest to the jack, were the winners on the day.
His team consisted of Howard Tonkin lead, John Mac Fadgen second Maurie Hately third and Phil Denham was their skipper.
Members of both teams received a chook each.

Valley View Bowls Club
Midweek
The rink skipped by Bev Lyon with Marilyn West, Kerri Savva and lead Julie Neale acquitted themselves very well against the Rich River team skipped by Rob Thomas.
Starting well and holding a lead of 8-0 after five ends, then 11-9 on the 13th.
Rich River then picked up and bowled well to score 11 shots to the Valley View’s team of three to take the match, 18-14.
Graeme Topp with Ken Black, Nance Saunders and lead Helen Ward started slowly against Allan Linquist and his rink.
Having won five shots to 15 by the seventh, the Valley View team battled hard to win 7-0 over the next four ends to bridge the gap to within three on the 11th.
The Rich River team piled on 13 shots to three, coming home over the remaining 10 ends to take the match, 28-15.
With Helen Emery skipping for Helen Armstrong, Marlene Topp and lead Rae Hann, and playing Leon Sharp and his team, the team kept within striking distance after picking up a handy four shots on the 10th end to only trail by one.
Unfortunately, they picked up only four more shots to Rich River’s 16 over the remaining 11 ends, leaving them 13 down at the end of play, 28-15. The overall result was to Rich River 74-44.
Next week is our last pennant match at Rochester. Let’s finish the season on a good note. Good luck.
Weekend
Graeme Topp skipped for Dave Clavell, Nance Saunders and Helen Ward at Rich River against Frank Ross and his rink, going down, 26-11.
Kevin Broadhurst, with a substitute as third, Tim Robertson-Skevington and Rob Varcoe had a great win over Leon Sharp and his rink by 10 shots, 21-11.
With skip Rod Donohue’s rink of Ken Hastie, Bob Greenaway and Ken Black against Heather Freeman and her rink, Donohue’s team only went down by eight, 25-17.
The overall match win went to Rich River by nine shots, 62-53.
A good close match overall for the last of the season.
A huge thank you for the tireless amount of work put in to our greens by our very dedicated men who volunteer their time without question.
We also thank you for the numerous amount of times helping to fill in for midweek pennant.
Hope to see you all next season.
Valley View Golf Club
Saturday’s stableford round produced some mixed results with a handful or so of excellent scores at the top of the leaderboard.
In A-grade, a countback was required to separate Daryl Harrison and Peter Blackmore, who both registered scores of 38 points.
A brilliant back nine of one over 37, which yielded 23 points, got Harrison across the line with those numbers including two four-point birdies along with four pars.
The only blemish on his card for the round came on the par four sixth which he failed to score on. Playing off a handicap of seven that is not bad going.
Blackmore was very stiff as he had 20 points on the back nine which would win a lot of countbacks.
In B-grade, Jeff Carnie posted the best stableford score for the day of 39 points, winning by three shots from Des Partington with 36 points. He was also the big mover in the summer Cup chase almost climbing to the top of the table. Almost.
Nat MacAuliffe took out the women’s event with 38 points and she was a two-shot winner from Julie Neale with 36 points.
Balls went to Paul Kuiper with 37 points, David Collins (36 points), Nigel Dow (34), Ian Scurrah (34), John Burrows (34), along with Ron Dixon, John McHale, Tracey Wade, Bud Thorsen and Gavon Armstrong all with 33 points.
Paul Kuiper (A-grade 12th), Ricky Walsh (B-grade 12th ), Lyn Canavan (third) and Von Morris (12th) all won nearest the pin trophies, while the voucher on the 15th was unclaimed hence the generous ball numbers in the ball competition.
The event concluded the summer Cup fixture played over four Saturdays with each player’s best three rounds making up their final tally.
While Carnie’s round of 39 points gave him a 10-point boost in the rankings, ultimately it was not quite good enough for him to overtake Nigel Dow.
Dow finished with a three-round tally of 110 points holding Carnie at bay by two shots as he finished as the runner-up with 108 points.
Peter Blackmore’s round of 38 saw him finish third with 106 points while Gavon Armstrong was fourth with 105 points.
Tuesday’s scores were on the low side with the exception of Peter Sherman who won B-grade with 38 points from Alan Hausler with 34 points.
Mick McAuliffe won A-grade with 35 points in a countback from a luckless Peter Blackmore, also with 35 points.
Ball competition winners were Kelly Cheong, Kevin Humbert, John Burrows and Daryl Harrison all with 33 points while Mick Gallivan (A-grade) and Tony Williams (B-grade) picked up nearest the pin balls on the third. The voucher on the 15 again stayed with the club.
On Sunday, the pennant team’s summer campaign came to an end in a tightly contested match against Hill Top at Kialla with the outcome coming down to the very last hole of the last match.
With the overall match square at two wins each all attention turned to Miles Gould and Jonty Sefton who were involved in a tightly contested match of their own, going to the last hole one down.
Unfortunately, they could not quite get the match to a 19th hole halving the last for a one down result.
The other match results: David Collins and Paul Kuiper won 3&2, Daryl and Wil Harrison won 2&1, Lawrie Casey and Peter Blackmore lost 3&2 and Laurie Radley and Mick Gallivan lost two down.
A big thanks to the players that made themselves available to represent the club during the Pennant season.

Women
Last Wednesday’s stroke event saw Janice Johnstone continue her good form.
Johnstone finished two shots clear with a score of 98-22-76 to win from Marlene Topp, 113-35-78.
Last week, it was Marie Watt’s putting that was a highlight of the day’s play.
This week it was Topp’s play around the greens which earned her high-fives for chipping in on several holes.
Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers Association
More than 100 veteran golfers played at Euroa Golf Club on February 3, confirming that an early assembly time of 8.30am is no barrier to achieving excellent fields.
A-grade recorded the top scores with 40 stableford points carded by Michael Gallivan of Valley View ahead of Kelly Cheong, Rushworth, with 39 points (same score as last year but this time relegated to runner-up).
Ray Gourlay, Kialla, won B-grade with 38 points from Howard Cooper, Cosgrove, runner-up on 36 points.
Terry Allen, Kialla, led C-grade with 38 points, and Peter O’Brien, Deniliquin, securing second spot on countback with 35 points.
Nearest the pin was contested on the 128m 18th hole where Ron Smith, Numurkah was nearest in A-grade; Dennis Prosser, also of Numurkah in B-grade; and Ian Scurrah, Lockington, best in C-grade.
Down the line balls, A-grade: Shane Pollock, Kialla; Chris Bennett, Strathbogie; Rolf Weber, Mooroopna; Don Hughes, Murchison; Mark Hegarty, Numurkah; Barry Barlow, Deniliquin; Graeme Willoughby, Deniliquin; Mick McAuliffe, Valley View; William Wright, Euroa; B-grade: Dennis Prosser, Numurkah; Lawrie Steward, Mooroopna; Ian Hannaford, Numurkah; Phil Steers, Shepparton; Pierre Klaessen, Numurkah; Mark Thorpe, Mooroopna; Richard Stockdale, Parklands; David Fullager, Avenal; Terry Allen, Kialla; Bill Murphy, Mooroopna; Alan Hausler, Valley View; C-grade: Bill Chilcott, Shepparton; Leo Hartup, Kialla; Ian Scurrah, Lockington; Doug McCarty, Numurkah; Robert McAdam, Murchison; Des Ramsay, Deniliquin; Mario Gagliardi, Kialla.
There are eight vacancies in the team for the challenge match with Central District to be played at Valley View on Monday, March 3.
This is a stableford event and teams are limited to 60 players with no handicap restrictions for team eligibility.
You must register to play with the secretary before Friday, February 28, by text or email. The team is filled in order of the receipt of nominations, so apply early.
The next regular event is at Nagambie Golf Club on Monday, March 24, 9.30am assembly for 10am tee.
Merrigum Golf Club
The weather was much more pleasant for golf on Saturday than it has been in recent weeks, with the temperature in the low 30s seeming cool by comparison.
Merrigum’s event was stableford, and the outstanding round of the day came from James Campbell, who won the day with a very good score of 38 points.
He did have one wipe for the day, but also had four one-point holes, which gives some indication as to how good the rest of his round was, scoring four-point birdies on several holes.
Jimmy also picked up the jackpot for nearest the pin on the 12th; however, there was a degree of luck as his tee shot clipped several twigs on the trees down the left-hand side but still managed to have enough momentum to get on the left edge of the green, which is nearly impossible for a right-hander to do.
Andy Baxter’s good form continues as he finished runner-up with 37 points. Andy is a regular in these reports at the moment, but his good round did have its consequences; it cost him a stroke from his handicap. He also had to survive a countback with Bill Johnson who also scored 37 points, but Johnno had to settle for a ball in the ball competition.
Johnno also won the nearest the pin on the sixth, while John Fuller was closest on the ninth. Andy also won the chook shed challenge with 11 points.
One of the highlights of the day was an eagle on the par five seventh by Ash Sanders, his first ever, which is surprising given the distance he hits the ball. His chip from around 30m never looked like missing, apparently. Well done Ash.
Craig Doherty was last Thursday’s twilight competition winner with a round of 44-8-36, which puts him in the mix for the minor placings overall, with Andy Baxter having a good lead going into the final three rounds of the official twilight season.
Gary Eden was the runner-up with 51-14.5-36.5, and he also won least putts with 15. Ash Sanders took the jackpot for nearest the pin on the ninth, and the two point cut was 38.5.
Merrigum/Rushworth played Mooroopna in the summer four-ball pennant semi-final at the very nice Kialla course on Sunday, coming away with a 3.5/1.5 win.
Greg Hall and Bill Bray were first off and reversed their form of the previous week to win 7/6. The pairs of Geoff Kirk/Rob Geisler and Tony Geisler/Ian Rathjen both won their matches 2/1, while Kelly Cheong and Jeff Perry were square after 16 holes when the match was called off when the combined team had already secured victory.
Well done to the team, and good luck next Sunday when they take on Hill Top at Hill Top in the final. Hit-off is from 8am.
Next Saturday’s event is the Bernie Doyle Memorial stableford.
Merrigum Bowls Club
Apologies for the missing bowls notes from last week but by the time we had the church decommissioned it was too late to start another two-hour session of typing.
Last week continues the trend of Merrigum’s recent results. We lost the three rinks at Dookie on Tuesday, managed to draw one rink at East Shepp on Saturday and the sevens lost to Seymour at home on Saturday.
Joe Chant, Neil Gardiner, Carmen Quattrocchi and Jennie Pell played Bill Kirkby and lost narrowly by three shots.
Once again Merrigum bowlers started badly and by the 11th end they trailed by 12 shots. They improved over the latter part of the journey and outscored their opposition 15-6 but couldn’t bridge the gap.
David Pettifer, Alan Dennis, Noreen Earl and Jenny Dennis played G Lowe and lost by 22 shots. They won seven ends but never looked like troubling the Dookie combination.
Greg Pell, Rob Pettifer, Steve Dennis and Tracy Clark met Glenda Exton and lost by 37 shots. They could only manage to win three ends and I think the less said the better.
On Saturday, the Fours played under the roof at East Shepp and only managed to draw one rink.
David Pettifer, Damian Parsons, Neil Gardiner and Rob Pettifer drew Vin Taverna and finished up with a draw.
While this looks to be a good result it must be stated that at the conclusion of the 16th end they led by 10 shots and looked to be cruising but sadly they lost 10 shots on the last five ends to hang on for a draw.
Joe Chant, Jim Arthur, Ross Pettifer and Steve Dennis played Murray Reid and lost by two shots. This was a close tussle early and Merrigum led for a short period but then the all-round contribution dropped away and we were never able to get back the lead.
Scores were level on end 11 and 16 but the Merrigum boys were outplayed over the final five ends. This was disappointing as the group combined really well in the first half of the game but sadly they couldn’t keep up the pressure.
Peter Warburton, Barry McCrae, Glen Denham and John Bailey met D Galt and went down by 13 shots. They began very, very slowly and after 11 ends they trailed by 22 shots so that was the end of any chance of a win.
To their credit they won eight of the last 10 ends and out-scored their opponents by nine shots. Sadly, it was too late to change the result but much better than their earlier performance.
In the last game Greg Pell, Alan Dennis, Carmen Quattrocchi and Graeme Hubble played Dave Nixon and lost by 16 shots. They won eight ends but their opposition were scoring threes and fours while Merrigum could only manage ones and twos.
The Sevens hosted Seymour and went down by a single shot on one rink and 19 on the other rink.
David Francis, Jennie Pell, Jenny Dennis and Will McCrae played G Quillinan and lost by one shot. Merrigum were behind by eight shots at the halfway mark and were really struggling but then somehow they got going and led by four shots with only two ends to play.
It seems to be a Merrigum’s weakness that the side fades over the last few ends and once again it happened; the Seymour rink scored five shots to zip to gain a narrow victory. Well done to Merrigum which had four beginners in the rink.
In the second game, the Parson family, Kellie, Toby and Liam, with Tracy Clark met T Lee and lost by 19 shots.
This group is to be admired for their resilience; they are beaten each week but never complain or make themselves unavailable. It has been a tough year for the Sevens but they will be much stronger for this experience.
Congratulations all our members who catered for 120 people last Sunday at the decommissioning of St Sebastian’s Catholic Church.
I have only heard glowing comments on your efforts to handle such a large crowd on such a hot day.
Events: Sunday, February 23, is the Ethel Younger Memorial tournament for all players and friends. Cost is $5 and you are asked to bring a plate. Names in by 12.45pm for a 1pm start.
