On Sunday, January 19 in Hay, the fancied Southern Riverina Cricket Council’s under-13s team lined up against the Murrumbidgee Bitterns team for the 3 Rivers Cup match.
Murrumbidgee won the toss and sent SRCC in to bat, SRCC captain Archie Chellew from Tocumwal opened the batting with Moama’s Ted Palmer and both settled in to their work, combining for a good opening partnership before Ted was bowled by a beautiful ball from fast bowler Josh Taprell.
This brought experienced batsman Max Johns to the crease; however, he too was deceived by Taprell and bowled before troubling the scorers.
Swan Hill’s Elijah Curran was caught out soon afterwards and this brought fellow Swan Hill team-mate Jasper Munro to the crease.
Jasper and Archie Chellew combined well and Archie made his way to a stunning half-century including eight boundaries, and he retired not out on 52 runs.
This brought in Deniliquin’s Daniel Burn, who started well with a beautiful sweep shot. A nasty bounce off the pitch saw him dismissed early, caught and bowled by Kaiden Pitt.
Rushworth’s Heath Ogden followed soon afterwards, bringing Moama wicket-keeper Sam McCleary to the crease.
Sam played dashing cricket, sending the ball to the boundary eight times before he retired not out on 51 runs. The SRCC Steers ended their 20 overs with a competitive total of 6/177.
Murrumbidgee openers Archie Auldist and Josh Taprell found the batting tough as SRCC bowled accurately and consistently.
Taprell fell on 3 runs, as did Vaibhav Patel, who was trapped in front of the wicket by Ted Palmer’s deceptive spin.
Auldist held out until Elijah Curran bowled him for 15 runs. The wickets then fell quickly as Palmer and Curran shared the honours, Palmer on a hat-trick at one stage.
He completed his spell with the figures of 4/17 after six overs, including a maiden over. Curran secured an LBW as well to finish with the superb figures of 2/13 after six overs including 3 maiden overs.
Deniliquin’s Daniel Burn chimed in with 3 late wickets. Coach Duane Johns was pleased with Daniel’s leg-spin bowling which secured two catches and Daniel also bowled a tail-Ender before he scored.
Daniel bowled the final delivery of the match to secure the 3 Rivers Cup for SRCC, tail-Ender Kaiden Pitt holding out to Ted Palmer for a fine catch.
This continues the domination from last year of this group of SRCC Steers. This team of talented cricket players is one to be watched in the future at this and higher levels.
