Round one of both the Picola and & District Football Netball League and Murray Football Netball League begin this weekend.
In the Murray League, the Deni Rams travel to Barooga on Saturday to get the season started in what could be a really competitive contest across the senior football and netball grades.
Based on last season's results and ladder positions, Deni should take most of the senior match ups, but the Hawks will no doubt be competitive.
Deni’s senior football side themselves are in what could be seen as a transitional period, bringing on a young leadership group and having a core of good young players.
Barooga, while finishing second to last on the Murray League senior ladder in 2024, will be looking to make an impression in round one at home.
On the courts, the impressive Deni Rams take on last year’s cellar dwellers.
Across in the Picola and District League, we will see a number of great contests and match ups lined up for round one.
We have a local derby with the Deni Rovers heading over to Mathoura to take on the Timbercutters.
The clubs’ senior football sides met one another once last year, in round seven.
Mathoura were able to come away with the chocolates.
On the same day, the mighty Rovers A-grade side handled their Mathoura opposition with ease.
The prediction is the Rovers will get the better of the Timbercutters this time around, in both the senior football and netball grades.
The many signings the Rovers made over the off season will put them in good stead for round one on the football field in the seniors and reserves, and expect the same strength from their senior netball sides.
The Blighty Redeyes kick off their season against Jerilderie in the opening round.
Last year, Jerilderie’s A-grade netball side just missed out on finals, having finished 10th in the Picola and District Netball competition. But the club was the home of league best-and-fairest, Ella Arnold.
In the one match up between the two clubs’ senior netball teams last year, Jerilderie walked away comfortable winners.
In the senior football clash last year, there wasn’t very much success at all for Blighty, who were swiftly beaten in Jerilderie.
This weekend’s action begins early Saturday with junior footballers and netballers, concluding with senior games later in the day.
