Morrison was assured once again in his defensive role during Hawthorn’s Thursday night victory over Carlton, registering six contested possessions among his 12 disposals, while also racking up a goal assist and two score involvements to go with seven tackles.
The 20-point victory over the Blues has also seen the Hawks assume not only top spot on the ladder, but also premiership favourite status with the bookies, ahead of Brisbane and GWS.
Having recruited the likes of Josh Battle and Tom Barrass over the off-season Hawthorn now boasts a stacked defensive end of the ground, but Morrison, who found himself out of favour at times last year, looks to have locked down a position and will hope to cement himself further with a continued run of strong performances.
While his round two performance was solid, the Benalla product did play a part in a minor controversy against Carlton, with Hawthorn fielding 19 players momentarily.
Morrison, who had just taken his position on the wing closest to the bench, was forced to sprint from the field as the ball was being bounced to rectify the issue, which became a major talking point on Friday as the AFL admitted it should have resulted in a free kick, rather than the warning that was given for a 6-6-6 infringement.
The Hawks will set out to make it four from four when they take on GWS in Launceston on Saturday night, in what shapes as a real test for both sides.
Elsewhere, fellow Benalla product Joe Berry has found himself among the goalkickers for the first time at AFL level, booting his first major as Port Adelaide romped to an emphatic win over Richmond at Adelaide Oval.
The Power bounced back from a dismal 91-point thumping at the hands of Collingwood in round one to triumph by 72 points over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon, with Berry once again showing plenty of potential.
An eye-catching left foot dart from the centre of the ground to find Travis Boak inside-50 was perhaps the best of the small-forward’s 10 disposals, although his work rate was rewarded with a major, receiving a handball over the top from Jason Horne-Francis after finding himself alone in the goal square.
Berry had five score involvements and a goal assist alongside three tackles and two marks, as he continues to establish himself as an AFL footballer.
The Power play Essendon off a short break in round three, travelling to Marvel Stadium on Thursday night as they look to add a second win to their tally.
