For Moama’s under-16 side, it’s one it can hang its hat on after overcoming Echuca in the grand final last Sunday for its first flag in the grade since 2016.
The Mowers were 33-run victors at Moama Recreation Reserve on the back of a man-of-the-match showing from skipper Archie Teasdale, who led from the front with 47 runs and 2-14 off eight overs.
Teasdale was well-supported by Rhys Drennan, who whacked 43 runs in a 78-run partnership for the second wicket after Moama won the toss and opted to bat.
Coming in as the underdog, Echuca made a strong start with the prized early scalp of league-leading bat Luke Stone before Moama steadied the innings at 1-90.
Mitch Peterson had Drennan caught for the second wicket before Echuca co-captain Grace Moyle dismissed Liam Stephens to leave Moama 3-96, still in control.
Ben Henson then trapped Teasdale LBW, sparking a flurry of wickets.
Moama lost 5-10 as Henson and Ryan Caldwell rolled through the middle order, but a Hamish Boyd cameo of 11 runs saw the Mowers finish on 8-144.
Angus Haswell and Moyle opened the run chase for Echuca, but James Barrat struck in the second over to dismiss Haswell for Moama’s first wicket.
Teasdale was the catalyst of the next two wickets, dismissing Sam Crossley and Ben Henson while the run-out of Peterson saw Echuca slump to 4-34.
Easton Carlile joined Moyle at the crease, and the duo compiled a valuable 40-run partnership before Carlile departed for 14 to the bowling of James Mason.
Mason struck again shortly after, this time collecting the big wicket of Moyle for 30 amid a game-changing five-over spell.
Liam Beasley (10 runs) and Ryan Caldwell (eight not-out) made a late charge, but there simply wasn’t enough time to track down the runs as Echuca finished on 8-101.
