After claiming the Barb Gilbert medal, for best overall performance, last year along with the women’s pairs and triples titles, Cass Millerick again has multiple championships within reach.
The Moama champion, partnering with Selina Goddard of Cabramatta, has advanced to the semi-final stage of the women’s pairs, while the all-Moama team of Millerick and Kevin Anderson are in the hunt for the mixed pairs, also reaching the semi-final.
In both cases, another local player will be in the opposition, as in the women’s pairs Echuca’s Di Payne, and partner Susan Roffey (Whittlesea), are the semi-final opponents, while in the mixed Moama’s Matt Robertson, with partner Leanne Poulson (Club Helensvale), are also in the final four.
It means at least one local name will be present in the finals of both divisions.
In the men’s triples, Kevin Anderson’s trio has advanced all the way to the final, now just one step away from the championship.
In the men’s pairs, the best local result was the pairing of Anderson and Cameron Keenan, who were defeated in the first round of finals.
In the women’s triples, the defending champion trio of Millerick, fellow Moama bowler Olivia Cartwright and Lilydale’s Olivia Slade, suffered a narrow 11-9 defeat in the final round of group action, seeing them miss the finals after finishing second in their group.
The pairs and triples were advanced to the final stages over the past week, played between March 23-26, and are now on hiatus while the singles preliminary rounds are being played.
All finals will be played this weekend over Saturday and Sunday, with the junior competitions also to be contested.
The Bowls Victoria Open is the premier Victorian event on the bowls calendar and features hundreds of competitors from across the state.
In the men’s singles alone there's 136 sections at the start of competition, each of which has three competitors, while there are 64 sections in the women’s event.
