The competition is back, with nine sessions remaining in the season, but an interrupted schedule and the 2022 floods have contributed to lower playing numbers.
Despite this, Moama Echuca Touch Football president Les Dicker said the competition had held on to the same number of teams, and invited the community to come down for a throw.
“Last year with a few things, including floods, we’ve dropped off in numbers,” Dicker said.
“The season’s still looking good, we have got four or five teams currently and we’re keen to find some people looking to get a team in or people aiming to try something new.”
Touch football shares similarities with rugby, but in lieu of a tackle, a simple tag will initiate a roll-on.
A focus on fun has been one of the drawcards of the competition, which remains one of the twin towns’ more popular casual sporting options.
Moama Echuca Touch Football caters to participants of all ages, including mixed and youth competitions.
“It’s casual and family-friendly,” Dicker said.
“It’s a good night out, everyone’s up for a laugh and quite often over the last few years, we’ve had families come down.
“We’re not out here playing for sheep stations — it’s really just about having fun.
“We were at a peak about five or six years ago of 10 teams, and we really just want to get back to the old heyday.
“We have 14-, 15-year-old kids playing, a few juniors having a run around to 40-, 50-year-old people doing the same.
“It’s nothing too stressful; have a quick run during the 10-minute halves and away you go.”
Touch football will resume at Moama Recreation Reserve from 6pm on January 30 at Brick Alley oval.
