The idea came from Benalla Saints Football Netball Club president Lloyd Johnson after towns around the Goulburn Valley were impacted by floods last week.
“Well it started with Rochester with a call out to Visy head office, so as part of Visy we thought, ‘where can we help?’,” Mr Johnson said.
“It really just shows how footy clubs can galvanise in a time of need. I really take my hat off to Seymour and Mooroopna, who bore the brunt with the floods, so for them helping out it is great.
“Kyabram have a number of footballers helping out as well around the towns — it just shows all the league have been helping out in the best way possible”.
He said the Saints would keep monitoring the situation across the community.
“We have got the resources and we keep an eye in case they need assistance,” he said.
Shepparton United Football Netball Club president Bec Monk said she was proud of clubs, including her own, helping to deliver boxes.
“Credit to all involved, it just shows you when times are tough we need sporting communities coming together and helping out,” Ms Monk said.
She said the boxes were important for those who needed to store valuables.
“It just help us in terms of letting people be aware they can pack away those important items in safety,” she said.
Shepparton resident Joe Fox said the initiative was particularly useful.
“I came down today (Friday) to help out a friend who needed boxes, so she was able pack up her things — it is a great help,” Ms Fox said.
Ms Monk said her club would be helping over the coming weeks with flood recovery.
“We have tradesman in the club and they will be helping where they can, as they will get the manpower,” she said.
