Some fine batting was on show in Northerners’ encounter with Old Students in its SJ Perry Shield encounter, with both sides posting lofty totals to almost hit the 200 mark.
The Jets opted to bat first on their home deck, confident that the net sessions during Christmas would pay dividends.
An Aaron Burney (57) and Patrick Cleary partnership at two and three set their side up perfectly, as the home side managed its way to 185 with six overs remaining.
A nervy start from Students had Zac Bathman and Nate Earl back in the sheds early, with Students quickly losing ground on the Jets’ target.
Cometh the hour cometh the man; up stepped Jayden Gagliardi who walloped nine sixes on his way to a supreme 81 off 40 balls, with the visitors finding the runs required with almost 10 overs to spare.
Mooroopna strengthened its hold on top spot as it obliterated Central Park-St Brendan’s in a lopsided affair, with the Cats’ bowlers skittling the Tigers for a meek 73 runs.
The Cats stayed perfect in the chase, with openers Michael Van Dorsser and Geoff Wood remaining unbeaten to find the runs after 16 overs.
Meanwhile, Katandra narrowly fell to Karramomus at Katandra West Primary School, Bloods bowler Darren Walker stealing the show with the Kookaburra in the first innings to come away with a five-wicket haul to his name.
Ian Wilson was the pick of the Katandra batters from down the order, as he managed to raise the bat on his way to a solid 61, dragging his side to a respectable total.
The Eagles would eventually compile 155 after 26 overs, restricted by a Walker onslaught, who would back up his superb bowling with a batting performance to match, producing a handy 43 as his side found the runs required just shy of the 30th over.
The final SJ Perry Shield match between Pine Lodge and Shepparton United at Kialla was unable to go ahead.
Whitelock Shield action also provided a spectacle, with three matches given the green light.
Some supreme batting was on show in Nagambie’s home encounter with Karramomus; Jeremy Ezard opening his side’s account in style as he smacked a quick-fire 72.
Three-wicket spells from Aryan Sharma (3-22) and Tony Rowan (3-18) held the Lakers’ bats to account, as they finished on 180 after 40 overs.
The total would prove insurmountable for the Bloods’ blades, who fell nine runs shy in the 34th over thanks to some clinical Bo Harrison (2-16) and Ryan Ezard (3-32) bowling.
Jonathan Mandaradoni was the standout Karra batter, putting the team on his back to compile 75 runs as wickets fell around him.
Meanwhile, Old Students remained unbeaten at the top, securing a 50-run win against Tatura despite a classy showing with bat and ball from the Bulldogs’ Jack Scholes, while Mooroopna fell to Waaia in a match that went down to the wire.
