Last week’s Big Bash League contest between the Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades, which was to be played on the Monday night, was postponed to the following night due to COVID-19 issues.
But with the club pocketing $6500 after a combined 13 sixes were struck during the clash, the extra wait and anticipation was quickly forgotten.
The club received $500 for every six scored in the game after two of the club’s A grade players, Cooper Fawcett and Jake Kelly, made a successful submission to be included in the Australia-wide competition.
The club, which is approaching 125 years of existence in the 2022-23 season, fields five teams (three senior and three junior) in the Goulburn Murray Cricket competition although it is in a small community that boasts only a fire station and two cricket ovals and a clubhouse.
It turned out to be a memorable night for the club, with national exposure on Channel 7 prior to the clash and its junior players joining in with the senior players for the first time in a practice session leading up to the BBL clash.
Drinks and food from long-standing local suppliers Kyabram Bakery and Ritchie's IGA Supermarket were appreciated by a large contingent of players, family and friends.
Most were sporting the two-blue Cooma colours, with every six — and even the shots that just missed clearing the boundary line — greeted with wild cheering.
