“We’ve been coming up here 11 years and we love the course,” these Sandhurst Golf Club ladies told The Free Press.
AFL high flyer Shaun Smith and his star North Melbourne premiership daughter Amy Smith at the Marcus Fraser Ambrose sportsman’s night last Saturday. On the right is Jacob Howard of Beechworth, the buyer a signed print of a high mark by Shaun.
About to hit off (some meeting the trees on the righthand side of the fairway), were Paddy Sheldon. Alan Rowe, Darrien Field, Joel Bilney, Honest Hoskin and Kevin Tengstron.
Completion of the Par 4, second hole, were, (left) Corowa Golf Club’s Deb Eason, Marg Tobin and Kim Gregg, and (right) Sandhurst Golf Club’s Michelle Cole, Jacinta Martin and Amanda Gainard.
The numbers of 234 registered golfers for last weekend’s 12th annual Marcuse Fraser Ambrose, over 100 people competing in the Friday evening’s Mizuno Shootout and over 200 at Saturday’s Sportsman Night delighted event organiser Shaun Whitechurch.

“They were great numbers and the 234 players was about the right number for organisation of the event,” he said.
“There was a very good atmosphere at the sportsman’s night, with Amy Smith, her dad Shaun, professional golfer Scott Laycott and retired detective Paul Dale.”
Organiser Magro said everyone was interested in Amy’s entrance into the AFLW, in Shaun Smith’s career which included football mate John Longmire, his enormous five seconds of fame with that screamer of a mark in the goal square in 1995 and his head knocks, and in professional golfer Scott Laycott’s interesting account of the legends golf tour.
After her glorious drive which was taken by the group, Corowa’s Leisha Thomas hits to the Par 4 second green.
“It was a very good atmosphere.” Magro said. “Paul Dale spoke last and was on stage for nearly an hour. The people were enthralled with his talk, a person who has been dragged through hell and the effect the media has had on his family and his life. He did not charge for his talk – he just wanted to help the Corowa Golf Club.”
Corowa’s Ryan Glare loved the Mizuno Shootout, claiming the $2,000 and one of the $500 nearest the pin prizes.
The many results from the ambrose competition were posted in the golf club’s Facebook.
“Here’s how it’s done, son” could have been the words thought by Dean Howard of Beechworth to his son Jacob who admired his Dad’s iron shot which travelled 120 metres and onto the green.
Corowa’s Mitch Hooper hits a good iron towards the Par 4 second green but it was the shot by the pro shop chief Nathan Thomas used, after he successfully talked to the ball through the air and onto the back of the green.
Sandhurst Golf Club’s Glenys Bryce, off 12.6 handicap, drives straight down the middle on the Par 5, 11th hole.
