Detectives have made an unusual arrest inside a Shepparton courtroom before court was in session.
A 20-year-old Shepparton man was due to front Shepparton Magistrates’ Court for unrelated matters when police arrested him on Thursday, February 13 following an alleged armed robbery in the city on January 31.
Magistrate Olivia Trumble said when the man’s matter was called for the first time that it was “not appropriate” for police to arrest the man inside court.
She said it lowered the chances of getting him back there.
“For police to arrest him in the courtroom is really unfortunate,” Ms Trumble said.
Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Anna Hanlon said the officers had requested to speak with the man outside but he hadn’t moved, and that’s why they arrested him in the courtroom.
The man was to be interviewed by Shepparton detectives on the same day.
