Police said two further fires were soon discovered across the train line in bushland between the train bridge at the end of Lincoln Dve and Hassett St, and the Peter Ross-Edwards Causeway.
Later, further fires were discovered.
Shepparton police Sergeant Tim Mosely said it was believed about 10 separate fires were burning near the shared path between Lincoln Dve and Victoria Park Lake.
An eerie orange glow could be seen from blocks away.

“There are no threats to property, persons or life,” Sgt Mosely said on scene at around 11pm.
He said police believed the fires had been deliberately lit, which posed a significant concern on a windy evening after a 40ºC day.
Fortunately, Sgt Mosely said, the biggest of the fires crews were tackling was close to the Broken River.
Firefighters from FRV, CFA and Forest Fire Management Victoria worked to get the incident under control by about 1.30am on Saturday.
Ambulance Victoria also attended the scene.
Anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area around the time of the fires or has any information that may be of assistance to police is urged to call Shepparton Police Station on 5820 5777 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 orcrimestoppersvic.com.au
Several units attended the multiple Shepparton fires, including this one from Tallygaroopna.
