Shepparton councillors appear fixated on giving ratepayers’ assets (land) to be developed for low cost/affordable housing to alleviate homelessness.
Councillors, please face facts. Housing provision has not been the responsibility of local government or ratepayers.
Historically, the state government has been in this role over many decades. Under ‘the Housing Commission’, developments were made in city and regional areas, including Shepparton.
These homes have slowly been sold to residents on low-deposit long-term finance at a fixed interest rate.
However the government (under all political parties) has not had a regular replacement program for these homes.
It happily takes the rental and loan repayments but does not build homes.
Our councillors should be joining all other local government bodies to pressure the government to step up and fulfil its obligations.
Again, I say to our councillors: do not donate ratepayers’ land.
What does the government have a housing minister for?
