Robert “Possum” Purtle and his wife Helen have once again jumped at the opportunity to be ambassadors for the event and are urging everyone to come along and join in the easy two kilometre walk around Chinaman’s Island, or make a donation to the worthwhile cause.
“It is an honour and a pleasure to once again be the Ambassador for our local Inner Wheel Club’s Two for Ten walk,” Possum said.
“We should all be very grateful for their efforts, and this walk is proof of that.
“The money raised goes towards research to help so many people locally and nationally.”
The walk is part of the national fundraiser for stem cell research using the richest blood from the umbilical cord to find ways to cure many diseases.
Part of the nationwide campaign, Inner Wheel clubs throughout Australia have been following and supporting the progress of research since 2000 when Inner Wheel Australia president Anne McGill met with Professor Marcus Vowels, who oversaw the Cord Blood Bank at the Sydney Children’s Hospital.
Newborn babies are helping save lives with cord blood donations needed for vital stem cell research.
Cord blood and cord tissue are rich in powerful stem cells and can only be collected immediately after birth to be viable for potential future use.
In the last two decades research has substantially progressed, and investigations are branching out further into new fields of regenerative medicine.
Medical conditions that could benefit include type 1 diabetes, cerebral palsy, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, burns, metabolic disorders, solid tumours, spinal cord injury, hearing loss and stroke.
Each year, Inner Wheel Australia contribute to this ground-breaking science.
Two for Ten walk organiser June Lavis said the event is in its fifth year in Yarrawonga.
“The more I’m involved in Inner Wheel, the more I’m aware of how the research is evolving and how important causes such as the Two for Ten walk are,” Ms Lavis said.
“Taking part in the walk can assist in the elimination of illnesses down the track.
“We hope to see many members of the community come along and support the event.”
Possum also urged the community to get involved in the elimination of a cause which has and will unfortunately touch the lives of many.
More than $4 million has been raised in the past 25 years and Possum said the Inner Wheel Club needed support to help keep the research going.
“This important research saves many lives every year, particularly children with leukaemia, auto immune diseases, and cerebral palsy,” he said.
“Helen, myself and our family realise how important this fundraiser is and are supporting the event in every way we can through sponsorship, donations and taking part in the walk ... we urge you to do the same.”
