The latest in the Biological Farming Roundtable podcast series aims to help farmers avoid soaring fertiliser prices by unlocking phosphorus reserves in their soil.
The podcast is hosted by NutriSoil’s Nakala Maddock, who interviews regenerative farmers who are reducing chemical inputs, rebuilding natural solar, mineral and water cycles and returning nutrients back into the food chain.
The latest podcast includes guest speakers agro-ecologist David Hardwick from Soil Land Food and Luke Harrington from Re-gen Farming.
They discuss the factors contributing to the increase in phosphorus prices and how biology can be used to start cycling phosphorus and unlock any phosphorus which may be available in different soil types.
The speakers cover the three important tools farmers can implement — optimising plant root systems, increasing biological diversity and improving grazing management — to start the nutrient cycling process.
They then discuss options such as planting a multi-species cover crop along with some pulses and legumes to help release phosphorus into the soil, making it available for the following crop.
To find out more about what steps to take to activate biology in soils, improve nutrient cycling and reduce the need for external sources of phosphorus, find the free podcast on the NutriSoil website, or via mainstream podcast apps and search for ‘Biological Farming Roundtable’.
