Traffic halted by milk spillage

Traffic on the Midland Hwy was temporarily stopped when thousands of litres of milk spilt from an overturned tanker.

On Tuesday, December 10, emergency services were called to an overturned tanker on the Midland Hwy in Byrneside, about 300m from the railway tracks, at about 12.40pm.

CFA District 22 commander Pete Dedman said the tanker, being pulled by a truck travelling east, experienced a mechanical failure and overturned across the lane.

He said about three to four thousand litres of milk spilt across the road and ran into the table drain on the northern side of the road.

Shepparton Highway Patrol directed traffic as the east-bound lane was impeded until emergency services had turned the tanker back upright by 2.17pm.

The milk company sent an empty tanker to decant the remaining milk, with the CFA working to contain thousands of litres of milk in the meantime.

There were no injuries, and traffic resumed flowing normally after the road reopened.

The EPA was notified, and a tow truck was requested to assist at the scene.
