Ms Leyonhjelm said her favourite part about the program had been getting to know the “inspirational” Fairley leaders and the expert speakers who were making a positive difference within their own communities.
“Many of the experts have been visionaries within their chosen career paths,” Ms Leyonhjelm said.
“They have spoken at length about the pitfalls that they have come across, as well as what has worked for them.”
One of her most loved activities within the program involved spending time in a particular town, speaking to local leaders about issues, opportunities and what kinds of actions need to be taken to advance the town.
As to what she has found most challenging about the program, Ms Leyonhjelm said the most difficult part was deciding what it is that she wants to achieve within her community.
“Having heard and spoken to a number of leaders, I am blown away with what they are achieving,’’ she said.
Some of the projects are incredibly vast with so many different aspects that it can feel overwhelming,” she said.
“I am torn by which community project to focus on, as there are a few that I am passionate about and see an urgent need in.”
For anyone who is considering applying for next year’s Fairley Leadership Program, Ms Leyonhjelm said “just do it.”
“The program not only helps the communities in which you live, it makes your own life feel so much bigger,” she said.
“The knowledge you gain from the leaders who present at each of the program days is life changing and along with that you create some pretty amazing relationships with those you are in the program with.
“Everyone comes from a different background but we are all wanting to make a difference.
“We are often told about the ‘Fairley Effect’ — but I can tell you, it’s a real thing. Until you are involved, you don’t really understand what it is, but being in it and being a part of a group of amazing people who are all wanting to make a difference, you can feel it.”
