Teenage driver allegedly clocked at 144km/h on Christmas Day

A 16-year-old Mooroopna boy has been charged after allegedly travelling at more than double the speed limit in Shepparton early Christmas morning.

Shepparton Highway Patrol police were driving along Doyles Rd when they spotted a Hyundai travelling with no headlights about 1.30am.

Police said a check of the vehicle’s speed clocked the driver doing 144km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Police went to intercept the vehicle when it suddenly stopped in the middle of the road as it had run out of fuel.

Officers were shocked to discover a 16-year-old boy behind the wheel.

It’s alleged the driver returned a positive drug test for methamphetamines.

A 16-year-old Mooroopna boy has been charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, unlicensed driving and breaching bail.

He will face court at a later date.

This arrest forms part of Operation Roadwise, a state-wide road policing operation during the high-risk Christmas period.

Police are targeting impaired driving, speed, distraction and fatigue in high-risk areas across Victoria.

The operation started at 12.01am on Friday, December 16, and finishes at 23.59pm on Tuesday, December 27.
