There has never been a better time to pursue a career in agriculture and help shape the future of the region.
James Goulding has been an agriculture trainer at GOTAFE for more than nine years, and brings his personal knowledge and experiences of running his own farm to class every day.
“I ran my own dairy business and piggery business for over 35 years,” he said.
James is passionate about passing on his knowledge to his students and seeing them succeed in the workforce.
“The best thing about being a trainer is leaving a legacy,” he said.
“I want to see students that I've taught as industry leaders down the track or managing or owning their own business, that's the biggest joy you get out of it.”
During the course, students study everything from cropping to sheep farming and beef production, and gain hands-on experience at GOTAFE’s campus farm, setting them up for a successful career in the industry.
“The main thing they learn is OH&S, and from there it's animal welfare, animal health and how to look after healthy pastures. Because we haven't got healthy pastures, you can't grow healthy animals,” James said.
“So that's what the course is all about. Teaching them to respect and look after their animals and their welfare,” he added.
The Certificate II (AHC20116), III (AHC30116) and IV (AHC40116) in Agriculture are currently available under the Free TAFE program for eligible students.
