Murray Irrigation is urging people not to swim in irrigation channels and imploring communities to avoid using irrigation channels to cool off this summer, and stick to safe swimming spots such as local pools.
Swimming in Murray Irrigation channels is not only prohibited, but extremely dangerous, acting CEO Nathan Holahan has cautioned.
"Irrigation channels are designed for water delivery and not for swimming or playing in," Mr Holahan said.
"As tempting as they seem on a hot day, there are hidden dangers beneath the water's surface, and a quick dip could cost a life."
Submerged objects and weeds, snakes and undertows are among the many hazards that make irrigation channels a treacherous place to swim.
Automated infrastructure can open and close at any time without warning, meaning currents and water depths change suddenly.
Moving regulator gates may also crush or trap people who may be swimming at the wrong place at the wrong time.
"We want children, families and members of our community to stay water safe this summer," Mr Holahan said.
"So please steer clear of irrigation channels and choose a safe place to escape the heat."
