The VSGP is an initiative designed to give Victorian school students a better understanding of how gardens work.
St Joseph’s Primary School principal Liz Trewick was delighted with the day as students learned about the role worms played in the ecosystem.
“It’s been a great opportunity to connect this incursion to our Sustainability Connections unit,” Mrs Trewick said.
“Having incursions come to our school means all students are able to participate without the need for travel.”
Teacher Amy Eade was in attendance as her class of Year 5-6 students were learning about worms.
“We have a sustainability garden, and we’re growing lots of fruit and vegetables at the moment,” Mrs Eade said.
“The students of the school are learning how to take care of the worms and the chickens, and they work hard to ensure the vegetable garden is a success.”
During one of the sessions, Mrs Eade briefly discussed the importance of how worms work to provide a suitable environment where different fruits and vegetables can grow.
“Over the past few months, the students have been learning about sustainability,” Mrs Eade said.
“It’s great for the kids to see how the world outside works and to develop an understanding of farming and agriculture. As you can see, the students are happy to learn about worms.”
According to the VSGP website, worms are fantastic waste disposal units that can eat their body weight in organic matter in a day.
While the students learn how to manage worms and provide them with suitable waste for food, the sessions also explore the challenges of ensuring that the school produces enough suitable waste regularly.
