A blacksmith’s hammer coming down on an anvil, the familiar clicking of a Morse code message and the crisp sounds of old-time music from historical radios were just a few of the reminders of the past for people who attended the Merrigum Historical Society’s 25th annual Heritage Day on Sunday.

It was the society’s first event since 2019 and it drew a large crowd to the town’s historic museum, housed in the old general store, where members provided an interactive and entertaining range of activities.
The sounds were matched by the sights as an old school laundry was in full operation, accompanied by butter churning, chaff making, a working engines display and wood turning.
Louisa Cleak from Tatura took a liking to the Dutch-made 1960s Phillips radio, complete with the 1920s Horne speakers.
The radio and speakers were part of Dennis Leseberg’s North East Vintage Radio Club display, a group based in Benalla.
