The decision was made by the Goulburn Valley Stock Agents Association on the morning of October 14 and interested parties were notified of the postponement via group text.
Shepparton Regional Saleyards manager Brendan Carey said the "cautious" approach was made due to many buyers being from outside the area.
“There was some concern that export company buyers wouldn't be able to make it so the decision was made that without the right buying field, there was no point yarding the lambs,” he said.
Goulburn Valley Stock Agents Association president Sam Nelson said the sale, which was expected to yard the biggest number of sheep this year, would now be held on October 23, despite it being a public holiday in Victoria ahead of the AFL Grand Final.
“We weren't going to have one because of the public holiday but we thought it would be in the best interest of buyers and vendors that we postpone it a week and hold it on Friday (October 23).”
Mr Carey said it was likely many of the lambs that were to be sold on October 16 were instead sold in Bendigo or Corowa on October 19.
He also expected the October 20 cattle sale to go ahead as planned but urged anyone who wanted to attend to contact their agent for confirmation.
Mr Carey also said there would be no spectators allowed at the saleyards until further notice.
