The Shearing for Kids with Cancer event has raised $101,898, surpassing the previous year by about $40,000, co-ordinator Katrina Ogden has announced.
The fundraising day, held on July 26 on Bill Barlow’s property between Rushworth and Colbinabbin, was established 10 years ago, initially to raise money just for Lori Perry, after she was diagnosed with cancer.
Lori, now 12, is still getting treatment, and wrote a thank you letter to the volunteer shearers, which was read by her mother at the fundraising day.
The fundraising has allowed the family to travel to Melbourne and stay near the hospital where she gets treatment.
Fundraising is now being channelled through the registered charity, My Room Children’s Cancer Charity.
Ms Ogden said when she first totalled up this year’s amount, it just about took her breath away.
“It was mind boggling; just unreal,” she said.
“I’m so grateful to everyone. Lots of people donated their time. People just stepped in to help and make donations to the raffle. It’s a great cause.”
Asked if she thought the community could beat this record, she wasn’t sure, but said she knows everyone will give it their best shot.
Ms Ogden thanked the volunteer shearers, property owner Bill Barlow, ‘It’s party time’ jumping castles and auctioneer Nigel Starick.
