Ann and Alex Sloane along with their grandson were just seconds from avoiding a huge gum tree suddenly falling across the Murray Valley Highway near Bundalong in the early evening last Wednesday, January 4.
“We and a courtesy bus were just seconds from being under the massive eucalypt which cut the highway just west of Bundalong, near Wrights Road,” Ann Sloane said.
The Sloane’s were among a few vehicles travelling towards Bundalong from Yarrawonga who witnessed the tree falling in front them.
“I guess everyone in our situation was thankful that they, and no-one else, was under the tree as it fell.
“My concern was for west-bound traffic not seeing it until the last minute, as they would have been driving into the sun, so visibility was compromised,” Ann said.
Other motorists expressed their near miss with the falling tree on Facebook. One driver believed she was just a half a second from being crushed by the tree as she travelled west towards Yarrawonga.
The Murray Valley Highway was closed for several hours while SES cleared the road with traffic being diverted down Flanagan’s Road.
