Before starting the nursery, Mrs Michel operated a landscaping and construction business with her partner.
The business and the nursery now complement each other and run side-by-side.
Gardens on Archer specialises in everyday plants with the “odd weird and wonderful thing” thrown in.
We are nearly there, a handful more days and we are saying “goodbye summer” and “hello autumn”.
Autumn is such a fabulous time in the garden — there are so many things we can do and the weather is generally a little kinder.
As we kiss goodbye to those scorching hot summer days (hopefully), it is a good time to take stock and review the plants in your garden that might need a little love and the ones that didn’t make it.
Extreme heat and wind can damage soft new growth, so if you have a plant that has been scorched during the summer, it is advisable not to trim the damage off until the weather becomes a little milder.
Autumn is the perfect time to give it a little haircut, removing the unsightly scorched leaves/tips and making way for lush new growth.
As many gardeners know, gardening is all about trial and error and summers in the Goulburn Valley can eliminate the weak and sometimes the young plants in the garden.
Have a look at what did and didn’t make it through in your yard, and theorise as to why they didn’t make it:
● Did they get enough water?
● Were they planted in a situation they were not suited to?
● Could the soil do with a little love?
● Do the children or the dog continually trample over the area?
It can be quite disheartening to plant a garden and watch summer wreak havoc, so be cautious before instantly replacing plants that didn’t make it.
Perhaps a different plant would be better suited to the position, perhaps planting in autumn will give the plant a chance to get a bit stronger before taking on another GV summer.
Autumn is also a great time for establishing a lawn, be that from seed or instant turf.
With the days being a little milder it is easier to keep up with the water requirements of an establishing lawn.
Like all things, gardening preparation is key to success, the better your base the better the finished product.
At Gardens on Archer we have lots of tips to help you with your lawn project.
For all those new to vegie gardening as well as seasoned vegie gardeners, the change of seasons brings the chance to add a crop or two to the vegie garden.
Time to plant things like cauliflower, broccoli, garlic, leek and beetroot.
Last, but not least, enjoy the change of seasons — the autumn colours as the leaves change to a myriad of reds, oranges and yellows is simply stunning.
I think autumn might be my favourite time of year.
If you haven’t got a tree in your yard yet that displays brilliant autumn colours, now is the perfect time to plant one, perhaps try an acer ‘maple’ or a crepe myrtle.
Happy gardening.
