March is National Pet Adoption Month and, with less than a week to go, the cats at Cobram pound have had their adoption fee reduced to $80.
This includes desexing, vaccinations, microchipping and free registration.
Moira Shire Council chief executive, Matthew Morgan said if people were thinking about adopting a pet, now was the ‘purrfect’ time.
“We have cats and kittens at the Cobram Pound waiting for their new homes and we would like to see them find suitable matches where they can live their best lives,” Mr Morgan said.
“Whether you’re looking for a relaxed older cat, a social cat, or a playful kitten … adopting means you’re giving an animal a new lease on life.
“Pets are great for companionship, but they also help to reduce stress and boost mental health and wellbeing.”
Adopting a dog has the added benefit of reducing the demand for puppy factories, where dogs and puppies live in appalling conditions and are treated inhumanely.
By adopting a dog, you’re essentially saving lives, and nothing feels better than knowing that you have given an animal a second chance at life and happiness.
Unlike cats, dogs are more social animals and need regular exercise to stay healthy.
Even the couch potatoes enjoy a good romp each day.
Dogs can be exercised off-leash in daylight hours at Yarrawonga Showground and Yarrawonga JC Lowe Oval Reserve if there are no organised activities or sporting events on.
In this case, they are welcome but must be on a leash.
In Mulwala, you can take Fido out to Kyffins Reserve, 4km east of Mulwala on Spring Drive and let him run free.

And a reminder to all pet owners that animal registrations are due for renewal on April 10.
