A wombat crossing is the affectionate name given to a pedestrian (zebra) crossing that is placed on a flat top road hump.
They are designed to give pedestrian crossing priority, but the raised platform gives further prominence to pedestrians and encourages motorists to slow down on approach.
“The design will incorporate wombat crossings on the Indigo side streets,” a Victorian Government spokesperson advised with Indigo Council confirming its support for the safety measure.
A recent study showed wombat crossings could lower casualty rates by more than 60 per cent and are effective at reducing vehicle speeds.
The design is expected to be complete in the coming weeks following minor changes and further engagement with Indigo Shire Council.
Construction is expected to begin by mid-2025.

The Victorian Government is investing $1.3 million in infrastructure improvements in Main Street to improve visibility for pedestrians and drives, provide safe crossing options and manage traffic flow in the area.
