Members enjoyed a birthday cake and a slide show demonstrating the original setting up of the exhibits.
The cake was cut by Betty Browning and Alex Sloane who were two of the members who were involved with the huge task of setting up the museum in 1994.
The Historical Society was originally formed in 1967 and it was always the intention of the members to establish a Museum to display the many items of historical significance to Yarrawonga Mulwala and districts. Over the intervening years, a number of options were investigated, however, it wasn’t until 1993 that the present building became available.
In September of that year Mulwala & District Services Club (now ClubMulwala), in a generous offer, made their Indoor Sports Centre available to Corowa Council on the proviso that the building was to be used for a museum.
The keys were handed over to the Yarrawonga Mulwala Historical Society in August 1994 and feverish activity took place to refurbish the sports centre and put the exhibits in place.
The Pioneer Museum was officially opened by the Honourable Jim Small, Member for Murray, on Saturday, December 10, 1994.
Since that date, there have been several extensions to the building to accommodate the ever-increasing collection.
Heating and cooling make it an ideal place for several hours of fascinating viewing.
Since 1994, more than 51,000 visitors have enjoyed the eclectic display of heritage items in the Pioneer Museum and the Machinery Yard.
