Murray Local Land Services said it is part of the autumn fox baiting program and ongoing rabbit and feral pig control programs.
These programs are aimed at reducing fox numbers to ensure the survival of livestock, ground nesting birds and wildlife, and to reduce environmental and agricultural damage caused by rabbits and feral pigs.
Pindone will be used in some locations to control rabbits, while 1080 will be used to control rabbits in other areas, as well as foxes and pigs.
Baits will be laid at 31 locations across the Murrray LLS footprint.
Signs will be displayed once baiting has taken place.
Murrumbigee Council is partnering with Murray LLS to specifically target rabbits on the northern side of Billabong Creek at Jerilderie.
Pindone baiting will take place near the Jerilderie Mini Rail, council’s sewerage treatment works, Jerilderie Racecourse area and the Jerilderie Golf Course.
Jerilderie Sports Club will also be carrying out baiting on their grounds.
Murrumbidgee Council’s baiting schedule will be from February 17 to March 30.
As domestic animals may also be affected by baits, it is advised that anyone entering any baited reserve exercise caution, muzzle dogs and supervise children.
To ensure effective control of pest animals, landholders are also encouraged to use bait on their properties.
In the Murray region, landholders can collect baits by joining local pest animal management groups and becoming a Feral Fighter.
This allows landholders to work together to bait simultaneously to cover a wide area, which results in a better knockdown.
By participating to become a Feral Fighter in the Murray region you will receive:
• free vertebrate pesticide induction training (now available online)
• 2 x free 1080 corflute fox signs per participant
• 2 x free biosecurity farm gate signs per participant per year
• rabbit control - access to free RHDV K5 viability testing for group participants
• up-to-date information and support from Murray Local Land Services.
Landholders who participate may also be lucky to win a prize through Fox Dog Lotto - an annual competition.
Landholders can enter by buying baits, with the winner announced following Henty Field Days this September.
The grand prize is a $2,000 store credit from your preferred local rural supplier.
There are also weekly prizes of bags of dog food which are drawn during the group baiting period.
