A makeover of up to an allocated budgeted figure of $100,000 was endorsed for a grant application to be lodged as part of the Local Road Capital Infrastructure Grant (LRCI) program.
The program is administered by the Commonwealth through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications.
Round 3 funding has been announced and an amount of $2,793,064 has been allocated to Federation Council, with funds having to be expended by June 30, 2023.
Eleven items throughout the Federation Council area totalling $2,793,064 were agreed to by councillors at their extraordinary meeting on November 2.
Cr Thomas welcomed the North Street Park’s inclusion to make it more user friendly and asked if the plans could be displayed on the wall at the civic centre for the community to view.
She also raised the park’s name, saying: “The name is quite bland. It doesn’t really ‘marry up’ with North Street. Could we also get some community feedback regarding its name?
“This delightful smaller park located on the banks of Lake Mulwala is the most perfect spot to gain the ambient experience that the Lake has to offer. The funding will include off street parking, picnic area with tables, chairs and shade.”
It has been excellent to receive input from local Mulwala community members to get to this stage according to Cr Thomas.
“Could this create the opportunity also to have a name change of this boutique park - to better reflect our heritage linkages and connection to the Murray River and Lake Mulwala?” she asked.
A $70,000 allocation in respect of the new doctor’s surgery at Oaklands – refurbished from a private dwelling by Kennedy Builders Mulwala last year – was raised by Cr Thomas because it is still not operational. “I attended a community meeting in Oaklands last week. What’s happening with the doctor’s surgery?”
Council’s director engineering services Steve Carmichael advised the $70,000 for the doctor’s surgery was for a complete fit-out to make it operational.
Mayor Pat Bourke added the impact of Covid-19 adversely affected progress on having the surgery operational with a doctor on site.
Other items included in the list of 11 projects were $750,000 for gravel resheeting, $450,000 local road resealing and $500,000 heavy patching local roads throughout the Federation Council area.
