The 250 megawatt Muskerry Solar Power Station is located 30km north-east of Bendigo and includes the construction of around half a million solar panels and a 200MW battery storage system connected to an existing transmission infrastructure.
The site, across land farmed by four different owners, is expected to generate enough energy to power 118,000 homes.
Described as a power station, the Edify Energy farm will include a battery energy storage system with a proposed capacity of up to 800MWh (200MW power output for four hours) and comprising of lithium-ion batteries with inverters.
Planning documents reveal that some limited grazing may be carried out once the solar farm is established.
The property owners include A. Tuohey, J. Tuohey and C. Tuohey, Burke Family Trust, and B. Griffin and G. O'Sullivan.
Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said the project would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 495,000 tonnes a year, which is equivalent to taking around 155,000 cars off the road for a year.
“We know projects like this are vital to boosting renewables capacity and putting downward pressure on prices, but they are also great for local jobs and economies,” Ms Plibersek said.
“This project will support up to 350 direct jobs in construction and up to 10 ongoing jobs.”
