The Spring Research Field Day will be held at the Irrigated Cropping Council’s research centre near Kerang on Friday, September 16.
The field day is an opportunity to walk through irrigated crop and fodder trials, chat to key researchers about the results and hear key messages about farming systems.
“The research site has grown this year with 30 trials,” ICC chief executive officer Charlie Aves said.
"We are collaborating with Murray Dairy to determine the best forage options for the dairy industry and continue our partnership with FAR Australia with the optimising irrigated grains research funded by GRDC.”
The field day will host key researchers Far Australia’s Nick Poole and Ben Morris, ICC’s trial manager Damian Jones and Mr Aves, seed company representatives and Murray Dairy.
Mr Poole said they were investigating increasing productivity in canola with good economic returns to find out if 5 tonne/ha of canola could be grown with no more than 150kg nitrogen applied — which was particularly pertinent he said given the price of fertiliser.
Also attending is University of Tasmania’s Professor Matthew Harrison who will introduce WaterCan Profit, a decision framework that allows farmers to select profitable crop rotations and optimise irrigation water use across the whole farm.
