National Tree Day started in 1996 and has since grown into Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event.
Since its launch, there 27 million trees have been planted across Australia, with five million volunteers donating a total of 10 million hours.
This year’s National Tree Day community planting will be held at Yakka Basin Reserve in Shepparton, on Sunday, July 28, from 10am to noon. Access the reserve through Grenache Dve, off Southdown St (park along Grenache Dve).
Greater Shepparton City Council staff and friendly volunteers will be there to assist throughout the event. All plants, stakes, guards, mats, gloves and tools will be provided.
Mayor Shane Sali encouraged residents to join National Tree Day.
“Planting a tree is a wonderful way to give back to the community and the perfect activity to teach kids how important it is to have a healthy environment,” he said.
Attendees can enjoy a free barbecue, as well as the opportunity to purchase hot drinks from a coffee van. There will be native plant giveaways on the day.
