He joins the council from Murray Irrigation, where he has been company secretary and general manager corporate services since 2020.
Mr Holahan has lived in the community for the past 18 years, with his wife Steph and their two young children.
He moved to Deniliquin to take a job as a cadet journalist with the Deniliquin Pastoral Times, but with family in the area his association with the community pre-dates that.
He completed his Bachelor of Law in 2022 and has a distinguished list of achievements, including completing the Company Directors Course.
Mr Holahan is also actively involved in the community, having served as president of the Deniliquin Drovers Rugby Union Football Club, where he was also a player and still serves as a committee member.
He was also proudly named Young Citizen of the Year at the Deniliquin Council Australia Day Awards in 2008.
Mr Holahan has been described as a “natural leader with a people-first approach, making him an excellent fit for the future of Edward River Council”.
His delayed start in July is due to his existing commitments at Murray Irrigation and planned leave.
Mayor Ashley Hall said Edward River Council looks forward to welcoming Mr Holahan to the team, and is confident that his broad experience and dedication to the community will greatly benefit council, and ultimately, the region.
"Nathan's extensive experience and dedication to our community make him an outstanding choice for this role,“ Cr Hall said.
“His leadership and vision will be invaluable as we continue to strive for excellence in serving the residents of Edward River Council."
Council CEO Jack Bond also expressed his enthusiasm for Nathan's appointment.
"Nathan's strong ties to Deniliquin and his deep understanding of the region and its key issues make him uniquely qualified for this position,“ Mr Bond said.
“His familiarity with our community and his commitment to addressing local challenges will be a tremendous asset to our council."
