Cr Greg James ran the event, with special guest speakers including Leanne Sangster and Cynthia Scott, who are both heavily involved in advocating for First Nations people’s needs and wellbeing.
Cr James said the event was the culmination of all the events that took place in Shepparton for NAIDOC Week.
“It’s an opportunity for the community, our First Nations people and the general community to celebrate, to celebrate our culture, our existence, our dance, our storytellers,” he said.
“Every year [NAIDOC Week] has a theme and this year is about our Elders in regards to respecting our Elders and their contribution that they’ve made to society and their life in general and how they are storytellers.”
Aunty Kella Robinson was in attendance and said she was happy with the turnout.
“The speakers did really well today, and talked about what’s really important to them,” she said.
“NAIDOC Week is important to us because it gets us together; particularly with us Elders, we like to get together.”
News photographer Rechelle Zammit headed to the library to capture some of the event.
