Mooroopna Primary School kids come out with their hands up for Harmony Day

It was all hands on deck at Mooroopna Primary School when the Year 5 and 6 students celebrated Harmony Day on Tuesday, March 21.

In the spirit of the day, the primary school students invited kindergarten children from Mooroopna Children and Families Centre to lend a helping hand in planting their decorated handprints in the school’s front garden.

Mooroopna Primary School Year 5 and 6 teacher Cathy Tricarico said the hands were a significant part of their celebrations, and her students did a lot of research on cultures before choosing their decorations.

Her students were ecstatic to share what they had learnt about Harmony Day.

“Harmony Day is where you celebrate different countries and cultures, peace and friendships, and the differences of people,” Addison Mildien-Chapman said.

“We honour different people, land and countries,” Draelan Atkinson said.

“I wrote hello in Chinese on my hand to see how other people in the world say hello,” Hunter Silvy said.

“We included the kinder kids to teach them what Harmony Day is about and to spread kindness,” Stella Simpkin said.

After planting the hands, members of Mooroopna Children and Families Centre treated the students and faculty to a song and dance about cultures.

Other year levels at Mooroopna Primary School and members of Mooroopna Children and Families Centre will contribute to the new garden decor throughout the week.
