Mooroopna Park Primary School has won the Department of Education Early Years Award for Promoting Children’s Health and Wellbeing, which was awarded on Wednesday, November 9.
It followed the school’s Australian Education Award recognising its student wellbeing program earlier this year.
Mooroopna Park Primary School principal Hayden Beaton said he was surprised by the win, due to being the only primary school entrant in the category.
He said the school won the award for its meal program for preps to Year 2 and its book-reading activities for students.
“We really encourage the idea that our younger grade groups get in terms of being fed and kept happy during the early years of school,” Mr Beaton said.
Mr Beaton said the school prided itself on maintaining positive wellbeing across all age groups.
“We really want to make sure our students have the best level of care; it is important, as we said with the impact of COVID-19 and the floods, we need to give caring support to students getting through this tricky time,” he said.
Mr Beaton said within the next year the school would have a hub set up in the school to help the community.
“We are developing a hub which we will make open to the community for further support such as donating clothes and food, and create a space for the community to connect with the school,” he said.
