Violet Town was the earliest surveyed town in rural Victoria, in 1838, on the recommendation of explorer Major Thomas Mitchell.

The Violet Town Heritage Walk has 18 historically significant locations, including the Violet Town Hotel, built about 1900, and the National Bank Building, built in 1905.
High St was the commercial centre of the town before trains began to pass through in the 1970s and the village moved closer to the train line.
In the 1900s, wood cutting was greater than dairying, but the wood was gradually cut out.
Violet Town Shire had 155 000 head of sheep and lambs and 12 000 head of cattle in 1994.
The Violet Town Museum and Art Gallery is located at 20 Cowslip St and is open from Thursday to Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm, and Sundays from noon to 3 pm.
The building has been restored by volunteers and was once a blacksmith and hardware supply store in the 1890s.
The museum is home to its own cafe run by volunteers where all proceeds go towards the operational expenses of the museum and art gallery.
Violet Town is about 47 km south-east of Shepparton, between Euroa and Benalla.
