Presented by advocate for rural mental health Mary O’Brien, ‘Are You Bogged Mate?’ is a free presentation that aims to assist men in rural towns to recognise the signs of depression, start tough conversations and seek help when they need it.
Challenges faced by men in regional areas, such as isolation, financial pressures and the stigma surrounding mental health, can often prevent them from seeking help.
In Australia, 75 per cent of those who take their own life are men, which translates to three in four suicides being men.
Council has committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring men in the community have access to the support and resources that they need.
Strathbogie Shire Mayor Claire Ewart-Kennedy said the event was an important step in council’s efforts to support rural men and strengthen community resilience.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health, and we need to ensure our country blokes feel supported,” Cr Ewart-Kennedy said.
“This event is about starting conversations, breaking down stigma and reminding our rural men that they are not alone.
“Attending Are You Bogged Mate? is an opportunity for the men in our community to gain valuable insights into recognising the signs of being ‘bogged’ and understanding the steps toward recovery.”
Are You Bogged Mate? will be presented at the White Hart Hotel in Longwood on Friday, March 21 from 5pm to 7pm.
Dinner will be provided and drinks will be available at bar prices.
