With suggestions flooding in, the Lockington Neighbourhood House and Lockington District Planning Group is putting plans in place to get the project off the ground.
“The town planning group decided we needed something that would attract people to town and just something colourful — and we have the tower there, so we thought that would be the direction to go,” Lockington Neighbourhood House co-ordinator Terri Hateley said.
“Over the past few weeks we've been in contact with Coliban Water, who own the tower, who have agreed to it all in principle.
“We're just trying to formalise everything at the moment.”
The group has to decide which artist it is looking at commissioning, as well as what will be painted on the water tower.
“They've had a look into the artists who have completed artwork in other towns around the area because obviously they're familiar with the concept,” Ms Hateley said.
“We're also trying to get a creative grant to fund the project.”
So far locals have sent in a range of ideas.
“I put the call out on Facebook and we've had a lot of suggestions,” Ms Hateley said.
“People have said they would like to see anything from galahs to the waterwheel, historical shops, native wildlife, dairy cows, or people such as Sam Iddles or Travis Fimmel.”
Ms Hateley said she would work on a list to send back to the planning group, and was happy to receive more ideas.
“We're still open to ideas, so we're hoping we can get as many as we can to be considered,” she said.
While plans are being made, she said the details of the timeline were unknown at this stage.
“The painting itself may not start until next year with the COVID-19 pandemic, but we still need to make a few more decisions before then.”
