That was the aim of a National Tree Day initiative undertaken by Deniliquin High School’s Year 12 students this week.
On Wednesday, the 29 HSC students planted 35 native trees at the rear of the school’s ag plot on Cemetery Rd.
Teacher Pauline McLeod said the planting, part of a larger Schools Tree Day project undertaken by DHS, is intended to give the students a lasting memory of their school days.
It also doubles as a gift to the school, she said.
“Schools Tree Day was last Friday, and we wanted to do something that would allow the Year 12 students to contribute a special memento,” she said.
“So they have each left a tree growing at the ag farm, which they can watch grow for years to come.
“The trees were all donated by Leaves & Vines, and Deniliquin Toyota also came on as a sponsor providing tree guards and stakes.
“All the students also received a gift pack of National Tree Day hats, gloves and other items.”
On actual School Trees Day last Friday, students participating in the sustainability classes did their own planting.
They painted planter pots and sowed sunflowers donated to the school by Deniliquin Mitre 10.
