The Australian Livestock and Property Agents Association (ALPA) 2023 Victorian Young Auctioneers Competition was won by Harry Cozens from Elders Rural Services.
Mr Cozens won the event from a close field of 10 finalists who he said had become a ‘close-knit’ group of friends.
“At the end of the day, we have became a bunch of very close mates and so I am very fortunate and grateful for having come out on top from such brilliant competition,” Mr Cozens said.
“It was quite a tight field.”
ALPA is Australia’s peak industry body representing more than 1200 livestock and property agency businesses which account for more than 97 per cent of the industry.
ALPA CEO Peter Baldwin said the organisation had always predicted a tight field of competitors.
“The qualities and skills displayed by the auctioneers today is a great reflection of the industry,” Mr Baldwin said.
“These young professionals whose ultimate aim is to be a great all-round agent with a strong client base have showcased the hard work they have put in to develop their auctioneering skills.
“And they have been boosted by the investment and encouragement provided by their employers across Victoria.”
Mr Cozens said the compatibility between stock and prospective owners was his priority.
“I take a lot of pride in finding the appropriate buyer for the right stock, and it’s not as simple as you sending in stock and hoping for the best.
“I like to think I can gain momentum throughout my sale and keep it simple but that then comes back to asking what I think the stock are worth and so hope to be close to the money and keep the control with me, not the buyers.
“The biggest advice I got early was to be honest and be true to yourself.
“Back your judgement 100 per cent.”
Mr Cozens started auctioneering during work experience with Kerr and Co Livestock and immediately knew it would be his future career.
“The part I love is the busyness and frantic nature of the job.
“I enjoy that there is so much going on and there are so many different aspects, so many different variables and reasons and I enjoy analysing afterwards which I believe has helped me with my stock knowledge.”
“I was told once: ‘watch the market closely and you’ll be a step above’.”
Mr Cozens was awarded the Graham Lanyon Shield and $500. He will now compete in the 2024 ALPA National Young Auctioneers Competition.
