Genevieve O’Reilly’s favourite tree at Lake King, Rutherglen.

Sunday, July 31 is National Tree Day and a couple of our readers responded to a call out for photos of people’s favourite trees to mark the day.

Rutherglen’s Genevieve O’Reilly sent in a beauty.

“I call this tree the Guardian of the Lake,” she said.

“It is a beautiful tree on the edge of Lake King in Rutherglen. It’s suffering a bit of die-back which is sad. I love it because it reminds me of endurance and resilience.

“It is a true cultural icon for me.”

Judith Hipwell from Cohuna dropped us a lovely note about her favourite gum tree.

“It is 27 feet [8 metres] around the girth. As you can see I have made a fairy garden out of it — photographed by many people,” she said.

“We live on the Gunbower Island and just across the road on the banks of the Gunbower Creek are many of these amazing gum trees — hundreds of years old, they’re huge.”
